If we want to see more women entering technology careers, we need to help young people understand the opportunities available to them

According to the Diversity in UK Tech 2025 Report by the Department for Science Innovation & Technology, the UK tech sector employs more than 1.8 million people and remains one of the country's fastest-growing industries, yet significant diversity gaps remain, particularly at leadership level.

A 2024 report by WISE shows that women make up just 20.2% of IT professionals and the Tech Talent Charter – Diversity in Tech Report 2024 states only 21% of senior tech role holders are women.

The need to take initiative on increasing diversity in tech has never been more pressing.

A lack of confidence and awareness of the opportunities available can make careers in tech feel closed off. It's important to show girls that, as the industry evolves, their skills are needed more than ever.

This is where our Girls in Tech Discovery Day comes in. This annual, award-winning* event, held at our office in Wolverhampton, gives Year 12 students, sixth form students and those at an equivalent level of study the chance to experience the tech industry and to see how their skills could make for a successful career in the field. We’re challenging the misconception that tech roles require specialist knowledge and demonstrate how business and customer service skills are increasingly valued.

The event is aimed at students looking at both career options post degree and those considering apprenticeships.

More than just a careers event

There has never been a better time to explore technology careers. The Department for Education’s June 2025 Skills England report projects that the UK will need around 380,000 additional workers in digital and technology occupations by 2035. Our Girls in Tech Career Discovery Day gives students the opportunity to experience a modern technology business first-hand, helping them understand the wide range of careers available in the sector and the skills employers are looking for.

Through interactive workshops, team activities and conversations with professionals from across our business, students gain valuable insight into the realities of working in technology. They will discover that successful careers in the industry are not limited to coding and technical expertise, but also rely on communication, problem solving, customer service, project management and business skills.

Whether students are considering university, apprenticeships or entering the workplace after further education, the day is designed to help them make more informed decisions about their future career options.

Breaking down misconceptions

Many students assume that technology careers are only suitable for those studying computing or technical subjects. In reality, modern technology businesses rely on a diverse range of skills and backgrounds.

At Tecman, our team includes consultants, project managers, customer success specialists, marketers, support analysts, developers and business professionals, all working together to deliver successful outcomes for customers.

Our aim is to show students that there are many routes into technology and that the skills they are developing right now could play an important role in their future careers.

Why teachers and careers leads choose girls in tech - supporting careers education

Our Girls in Tech Career Discovery Day has been designed to support careers education by helping students explore future opportunities in a growing industry.

The event provides students with direct employer engagement, insight into workplace environments and exposure to a variety of career pathways, helping to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Prior to our Girls in Tech Career Discovery Day, only 26% of attendees said they would consider a career in technology. Following one event, this increased to 63%, demonstrating the positive impact employer engagement can have on career awareness.

Teachers, careers advisers and sixth form leaders regularly tell us that one of the biggest challenges students face is understanding what careers actually exist beyond traditional job titles. This event helps broaden those horizons and challenge outdated perceptions of the technology sector.
